Marching Band

Membership in this group is for students who have reached a certain degree of excellence in their instrumental work. New students to the district will need to get permission from the director of bands to enroll. The band performs for football games, parades, marching contests, and two seasonal concerts. Tuesday night rehearsals and weekend performances are required through October. The Fall Marching Band includes all band and flag members in the high school. The student will develop skills necessary to communicate and express feelings through the language of music. These include:

Symphonic Band

This ensemble is a select group made up of the top performers from the overall band program. You must audition to perform with this group. Auditions will be held in the first nine weeks of each Fall Semester. This group will rehearse grade 4, 5, and 6 literature and perform three concerts and compete at the State Large Ensemble Contest. These members will combine with the Concert Band to play for the Viking Pep Band for basketball games and will have the option of participating in a spring trip every other year. The student will continue developing the following skills:

Concert Band

Concert Band is for the instrumentalist that simply wants to play music in a non-competitive setting. Any student who was enrolled in Viking Marching Band may join Concert Band. Literature will range from grade 3-4 and will explore all styles of music. These members have three seasonal concerts and will combine with the Symphonic Band to play for the Viking Pep Band for basketball games and will be given the option of participating in the biannual spring trip. The student will continue to develop the following skills:

Jazz Ensemble I

The purpose of Jazz Ensemble I is to expose musicians drawn from the Viking Band to a wide variety of musical styles, techniques, and cultures. Students will learn and perform big band swing, pop-rock, Latin funk, and many other musical styles. Emphasis on improvisation and basic music theory will be included as well. This group will consist of 4-5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 altos, 2 tenors, and 1 baritone saxophone. In addition, piano, electric guitar, electric or upright bass, and drum set will make up the group’s rhythm section. Students will be required to audition for placement in Jazz Ensemble I in the Spring the previous year. Students wishing to enroll in the SHS Jazz Ensemble must be concurrently enrolled in the SHS Concert Band, unless permission to enroll is given by the instructor. The student will continue developing the following skills:

Jazz Ensemble II

The purpose of Jazz Ensemble II is to expose musicians drawn from the Viking Band to a wide variety of musical styles, techniques, and cultures. Students will learn and perform big band swing, pop-rock, Latin, funk, and many other musical styles. Emphasis on improvisation and basic music theory will be included as well. Enrollment is open for any member of the Viking band that has a desire to play jazz music. Instruments include: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drum set. The student will be able to develop the following skills:

Pep Band

- There are two Pep Bands—those enrolled in Symphonic Band “S” and those enrolled in Concert Band “C”
- Attendance is required and will be part of current nine-week’s grade
- Same rules apply as Marching Band/Band Shirt is required to play
- Must be set up and ready to play by 6:15p unless otherwise noted
- Play for girl’s half through boy’s game
- Rock bands (with pep band members) may audition to play “fillers” & second half of boy’s games (on “both” nights)

If your student is interested in private lessons, contact Mr. Stahly—older students frequently fund their runs to McDonald’s by tutoring the younger students.
