Money and Meals

Meals in New York are more expensive than in Kansas. Fast food ranges from $7.50–$12.00 a meal. Anything nicer will cost more.

Students will be financially responsible for:

There will be ample time for souvenir shopping, so bring extra spending money for those items.

It is suggested that $200 will suffice.

    • 1:00 pm General meeting in band room with luggage
    • 1:30 pm Luggage check and load buses
      • Depart Seaman High School
        • Drive overnight to New York City

  • Monday, November 8th
    • 3:00 pm (approx) Arrive at hotel in New Jersey
    • 4:30 pm Depart for New York City
    • 5:30 pm Dinner in Times Square Hard Rock Cafe
    • 7:00 pm Depart for Empire State Building
    • 9:00 pm Depart for hotel

  • Tuesday, November 9th
    • 8:30 am Depart for ferry from NJ side
    • 9:00 am Ferry to Ellis Island
    • 9:15 am Arrive Ellis Island (tour)
    • 11:00 am Ferry to Statue of Liberty (lunch on own)
    • 12:45 pm Ferry to Manhattan
    • 1:00 pm Walking tour of Lower Manhattan
    • 3:00 pm Visit South St. Seaport, change into theatre clothes, etc…
    • 4:00 pm Shopping in Chinatown (dinner on own)
    • 5:45 pm Depart for theatre

    • 5:00 am Breakfast at hotel

    • 7:00 am Arrive and unload equipment and proceed to Times Square
    • 8:00 am Mass band warm-up
    • 8:30–9:00 am Mass band performance
    • 9:30 am Return to buses (food court available for snacks)
    • 10:00 am–2:00 pm Sounds of the City tour (lunch on own)
    • 2:00 pm Explore 5th Avenue (dinner on own)
    • 5:30 pm Depart for hotel

  • Thursday, November 11th
    • 5:00 am Check out of hotel
    • 6:00 am Depart for motivational breakfast
    • 9:30 am Depart for parade staging area
    • 11:00 am Parade begins
    • 12:00 pm Bands step off
    • 2:30–3:00 pm Parade ends head to South Street
    • 3:30 pm Arrive at South Street (change clothes in bathrooms)
    • Visit South Street Seaport
    • 5:00 pm Depart for NYC for street dance/awards
    • 8:30 pm Dance ends, depart for Seaman High School
    • Drive overnight

  • Friday, November 12th
    • 7:00–8:00 pm Arrive at Seaman High School

    • DVDs for the bus (clearly marked with name)
    • Water (no coolers)
    • Emergency change of clothes

  • One suitcase for under bus
    • Band shirt/pants for under uniform

    • Warm jacket/coat
    • One set of nice clothes for Broadway show—No jeans!
    • Enough clothing to last the entirety of the trip
    • Something to carry money/ID (preferably forward facing)
    • * Spending money—enough to cover 12 meals and souvenirs (about $200)

* Tips on spending money: Fast food runs about $7.50–$12.00 depending on what is purchased. A McDonald’s Value Meal is currently $7.50. Restaurants will be $15.00+ depending on the restaurant. Food vendors are usually cheaper depending on the items purchased, i.e. pizza is around $2.50–$3.00 a slice.

Reminder: Your luggage should include your instrument, one carry on bag, and one suitcase. We are storing instruments and uniforms under the bus and not on a box truck, so we will need the extra room under the bus.

If you are making plans for your family to travel to New York to watch the band, contact Debi Schrock (debi.schrock@washburn.edu) with any arrangement questions. The band staff has their hands quite full with student arrangements, so Debi is coordinating family arrangements.
