Topeka Duck Race
A fundraiser with the Topeka Duck Race was approved last meeting, and the following information is shared tonight:
Dan & Julie Hejtmanek from the Sertoma club presented the 'DUCK RACE' to be held Sept. 11, 2010. They explained how they approach organizations to help them. Any duck adoptions we sell we get 50% of the profit. Remaining profits go to Big Brothers & Big Sisters. Adoption certificates were passed around for review; they were last year's certificates. They are self-mailers that once sold are easily mailed in. They keep track of the sequence of numbers that are sent to us.
10,000 ducks are numbered, dumped into lake Shawnee, the duck across the finish line wins the car. It is all tracked by computer. Winners do not need to be present to win. Certificates should be here before the end of school; will have all summer to sell. Promotions start a month before school starts. Biggest sales come in the last 3 weeks; 2–3 days before the race is when everything is due. Posters are available. Mary Yadon has volunteered to coordinate this for the band boosters. Either mailing in individually (as they are computer tracked) is fine, but they do prefer to send it all in at once.
We need to figure out how we want to conduct it and track it. It was proposed that we give the student some credit for working, similar to the fireworks stand.
Minutes
Minutes of 12/3/09 accepted.
Treasurer's Report
T.A. reviewed the treasurer's report as distributed.
Mr. Stahly Report
- Introduce Brian, student teacher from KSU.
- Student accounts updated; the 2nd wave of cup orders are not reflected on the balance sheet. Contact Ms. Seago if you have questions about your student's account. This was opened up to the 8th-graders this semester.
- 190 in band projected enrollment for next semester. Color guard has grown/matured. Megan Sells is the color guard coordinator and they are going to Rose Hill for a presentation, they have been active this winter.
- Official acceptance for the Veteran's day parade; New York City, 91st annual. Thursday, November 11. Parents want to be involved, he asks to email him to be a sponsor, why you want to be a sponsor. Teachers in the district get first choice. He will keep a database of everyone. Do not stay with the kids in the hotel rooms. The kids stay 4 to a room; a sponsor is assigned to 10–12 kids. Constant monitoring. Parents that want to go drive/fly by themselves, he can assist with a different hotel, as he doesn't want parents 'hovering'. An idea to do is to sell banners in honor of veterans to march in the parade behind the band. Distance of the route is 2 miles. 20,000 in parade, millions watching.
- $800 in band accounts for the trip. Leave on a Sunday 7th, 24 hours of driving, Monday/Tues/Wed. night in hotel, Thursday is parade, go to a dance, get on a barge in the water, then get on busses to come home. Missing a whole week of school. 24 hours driving back.
